About
Birthplace of the 19th century polymath Jan Evangelista Purkyně.
The chateau of Libochovice stands on the site of an earlier Gothic fortress, which converted by Jan of Lobkowicz into a two-story Renaissance chateau in the years 1560–1564.
The later owner Gundakar of Dietrichstein, who bought the fire-damaged chateau from Sternberg, initiated an extensive Baroque reconstruction in the years 1682–1690, designed by the renowned Italian architect Antonio Porta.
In 1685 an ornamental garden, which also includes greenhouses, was created here.
The interiors present collections of rare tapestries, glass, porcelain and a unique Baroque tiled stove.
The Italian sculptor and plasterer Jan Brokoff participated in the interior decoration and the main Saturn Hall, which stretches over two floors.
The house is also significant as the birthplace of the famous Czech scientist Jan Evangelista Purkyně, who has an exhibition here (free-flowing tour).
One of the tour routes offers visitors a visit to the extensive cellars located both under the castle and under part of the courtyard.
